There is Giroud who has followed a similar route to the top. He was in Ligue 2 with Tours and then went to Montpellier. I think Nolan is on the right track. He has other qualities. He likes running into space and to shoot from anywhere. He reminds me of Jean-Pierre Papin when he started out in Ligue 1.
