That's always struck a gigantic chord with me and I always heard that same bitter-sweet feeling in the music of the Strokes. I've always tried to recreate that by coupling happy melodies with sad lyrics.

The Strokes is an American rock band formed in 1998 in New York City. They rose to fame in the early 2000s as leaders in the garage rock revival.
