It was important that right off the bat, you know you're watching a show composed by Green Day
It's really all about story. In a song like `21 Guns' you are pretty much tracking three story lines at the same time, and each character is in a pretty emotional place - in some cases a very down place ... I thought there was an opportunity to start that song a little bit more naked in the first chorus...
I definitely wanted to go slowly because I wanted to earn the trust of the band and to make sure they felt comfortable
As with any piece of art it will have a wide range of opinions
It's a constant battle ... Even when you have a big up, it's always on to the next thing if you're always trying to build a long career.
I would not have signed on if this were just something frivolous and light
At the end of the day, this was an album by Green Day, and I wanted to get out of the way and let the music do the work in the story
